The Mission

One day, a mysterious package was found lying on John’s bed. What is this? John wondered, a thoughtful expression plastered to his face. But as soon as his fingers were grappling the dusty letter, a deep voice growled his name. “John?”

John spun around, clutching the letter with fear. “Dad?” he said anxiously into the doorway. A clatter of footsteps was heard, then John saw his younger brother’s mischievous face peeking into his bedroom. “Ben?” John groaned, putting a hand to his forehead, while slowly tearing the letter open.

“Yes?” his little brother questioned. “Come have a look at this letter.” John replied. On the letter, in emerald-green ink, it said:

Come to your dining room.

The secret will be discovered there. Do not be afraid. We are here to help.

Regards,

The Secret Special Service (SSS)

Before John could say a word, Ben dashed down the corridor, his feet noisily creaking on the floorboards. Suddenly, there was a yelp, then Ben screaming at the top his lungs “HELP!!” John felt his fear becoming worse, engulfing him in its dark claws. He willed to grab his younger brother, but he was too petrified. He couldn’t move a muscle.

An hour later, John cautiously padded down the corridor to his dining room. The care he felt for his brother was overpowering his fear, making him go search for him. The floorboards creaked, like if they were trying to warn him. Unaware, John’s foot stepped in a large, dark hole.

John found plummeting down, towards a sandy surface. He scrunched his eyes shut. He didn’t want to see what was going to happen to him. As he landed, his limp body collapsed onto the surface with a heavy thud. He woke in a dark hallway, his body unable to be seen.

Suddenly, he felt his mother’s warm hands clapping down onto his. “Promise me you won’t be anxious anymore,” her voice whispered, bringing back memories of all the times she was alive. Okay, he thought. Anything that his mother said was bound to be true. John was really worried about everything that happened to him, while his brother seemed to do anything blindly.

A loud ROAR suddenly interrupted their little conversation. John felt his mother fade away and zoomed back into reality. Ben seemed to be backing away towards a wall, for a dragon was cornering him. Its scales shined brightly like the moon while it hissed impatiently, fury flaming in its eyes. John felt like running away, but his mother’s voice kept repeating in his head. Don’t be anxious.

John found himself understanding what the dragon had gone through. He saw how a group of soldiers were continuing to scavenge its species. Suddenly, there was a crash of debris, for the army of soldiers had forced their way inside.

The dragon bared its fangs as its tail thrashed in the air in rage. The soldiers lined up their guns, training them on the dragon. Before they could shoot, John threw a tiny pebble towards the ceiling. The soldiers dropped their guns and chuckled, for they had no reason to worry. Quick as lightning, Ben grabbed the guns and chucked them towards the dragon.

The soldiers backed away slowly, since they now didn’t have any protection. As the dragon blew one astounding flame at the huddling group, John and Ben grappled the dragon’s horns tightly. The dragon finally leaped up majestically and flew into the clouds. As John passed the golden stars glowing against the  silver moon, he thought that he had done well. Still, every day, his promise still repeats in his head.
