  Life cycle of a monarch butterfly The monarch butterfly is a flying insect with orange, black and white wings.They drink nectar from flowers using their long tube-like tongue.They have a very complicated life cycle. Firstly, the female butterfly lays her eggs on the underside of a swan plant leaf. They lay the eggs on the underside because when predators come, they can’t see them and can’t eat them. Secondly the eggs hatch and become larvae. The only thing they do is eat, eat and eat! Then they get bigger and fatter.But did you know what they do with their own skin? When their skin gets too small, they shed it off. This is called moulting. After a period of time, they hang upside down on a tree branch and spin into a chrysalis. This is when the magic happens. The caterpillar turns into a monarch butterfly! This is called metamorphosis. The chrysalis is made of a hard layer of skin. After about 2 weeks, the monarch butterfly comes out of its chrysalis.
