Hatupatu and the Birdwoman
Many, many moons ago in the deep, dark forest there was a man named Hatupatu. One day, while he was wandering around the forest, he heard a great Hatupatu crept towards the scary shriek. He ducked behind some fern bushes. He opened the fern branches and saw…
The back of a very strange creature. It was standing on its bony elbows. It suddenly stood on its bony legs. It stretched its black, bony bat like wings. When it turned around, it spotted Hatupatu and glared at him. Hatupatu’s mouth opened wide, because he finally recognised the creature. It was the Birdwoman, the scariest woman and bird-like creature. The Birdwoman let out an ear piercing SHRIEK that could make you unable to hear. It was so loud that it shook the whole forest…
Then the Birdwoman started chasing him. Hatupatu ran for his life, dodging vines and trees. Then he came to a special rock. “Mata ti, Mata ta!” Hatupatu cried. The rock split open and he jumped inside. All that was visible was the Birdwoman’s eye. A little later…
The first sound he heard was the creaking of the rock. Once he was out, he scanned the area for the Birdwoman. Thinking he was safe, he turned around and headed home. On his way, he came to a very strange land with red soil and steam vents. But after a while, the Birdwoman appeared. Hatupatu ran as he did before. When the Birdwoman was close, he fell and jumped through some steam. The Birdwoman was badly burnt and fell to the ground. Hatupatu, grabbed a thick stick, raised it high above his head, swung it sharply and finished her off.
